Chris Evert Diagnosed With Ovarian Cancer

You may have seen the news this week that tennis legend Chrissy Evert has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  That is the headline; but her story goes much deeper.

According to published reports, Chris Evert’s sister Jeanne was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2017.  She died of her illness in February 2020 at age 62. After her diagnosis, Jeanne tested negative for pathogenic BRCA1 mutations.

But times change.  Tests evolve.  In October 2021, the Evert family received a call notifying them that updated information revealed that Jeanne did, in fact, have a pathogenic BRCA1 mutation.

Chrissy immediately got tested and learned she, too, carried the newly identified BRCA1 mutation.  She immediately scheduled a complete hysterectomy for December.

When her doctor called her 10 days later with the news that her pathology revealed malignant cells in her fallopian tube, she realized immediately what that meant.  She was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer on December 15.

Fortunately, Chrissy’s cancer was found early and after surgery and chemo she is now cancer free.  You can read her story here.
